In social care, recruitment isn’t just about filling vacancies, it’s about making the right match.

Why retaining staff in Social Care starts before someones first day at work

In Social Care we often focus heavily on attracting applicants, but retaining the staff we recruit starts long before someone’s first day. It begins with aligning the right person with the right service, the right team, and the right environment.

Because social care isn’t one-size-fits-all.

A highly capable support worker who thrives in a fast-paced service supporting people with complex needs might feel completely out of their depth in a quieter role where they’re expected to work very independently. And it works the other way around too. Someone who is passionate about elderly care may find it difficult to feel confident or fulfilled in a behavioural support setting. When someone’s skills, interests, and working style don’t quite match the role, confidence can dip, stress can rise and too often, people decide the job simply isn’t for them.

When we get the match right, the difference is clear, staff feel more confident and capable in their roles, teams become more stable and the people we support experience better continuity of care.  Taking the time to really understand both the applicant and the service, including values, personality, pace, complexity, and team culture should be an essential.

In a sector already facing significant workforce challenges, thoughtful matching isn’t just good recruitment practice, it’s a retention strategy.
