The Power of Meaningful Work: Boosting Engagement and Retention
When employees are asked what matters most in a job, salary typically comes first, but it now appears that meaningful work is coming a close second.
Research has shown that meaningful work plays a vital role in boosting engagement and reducing turnover. Employees who find their work meaningful are 64% more fulfilled, 4.5 times more engaged, and 69% less likely to leave their jobs.
The ‘Skills and Employment Survey’, gathered insights from 2,800 face-to-face interviews and 2,650 online responses from British workers aged 20 to 65 years old. The results revealed a generally positive view of work among participants:
- 70% regularly felt a sense of “a job well done”
- 75% consistently felt their work was useful
- Only 5% doubted the value of what they do
Women were more likely than men to report a strong sense of meaning at work and younger employees were more prone to question the value of their roles, reporting lower levels of usefulness and belonging than their older counterparts.
The survey highlighted several factors that would contribute to a deeper sense of purpose on the job:
- opportunities to apply learnt skills
- freedom to take initiative
- supportive management
Jobs that focus on improving others’ well-being, particularly in healthcare, education, and construction, were ranked among the most meaningful.
These insights are reinforced by a 2020 McKinsey & Company study, which found that
– 82% of employees believe it’s important for their organisation to have a clear, socially beneficial purpose.
– 70% said their own sense of purpose is closely tied to their work.
So, creating a workplace where people feel their contributions truly matter is more likely to result in staff that are more productive, loyal, and committed.
